Pogradec - Is It Worth Visiting

If you’re reading up on Pogradec, you’re probably wondering if the drive there is actually worth it, is Pogradec worth visiting—and in short… yes, 100% yes. It’s not the kind of place that shouts for attention on every Albania itinerary, which honestly makes it feel even more special. It’s laid-back, peaceful, and the kind of place where time just slows right down.

The Drive from Tirana

We drove from Tirana and, not gonna lie, the journey itself was half the fun. You take the SH3—the only real road into Pogradec from Tirana—which winds through little villages and towns that give you a glimpse of Albanian life outside the tourist bubble. It takes around 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic (and how often you stop to take photos, which you absolutely will).

The views along the way are lush, but then… it hits you. That moment when the road starts to dip and curve, and suddenly Lake Ohrid comes into view. Snow-capped mountains in the distance, sunlight dancing on the water—it’s honestly breathtaking. It’s one of Europe’s oldest and deepest lakes, shared with North Macedonia, and it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason. Make sure you stop at one of the viewpoints (you’ll know it when you see it) because it’s the kind of view you’ll want to bottle up and keep forever.

Arriving in Pogradec

Once you get closer to town, the road smooths out into what feels like a brand-new stretch—so easy to drive. You just follow it straight and it leads you right into the heart of Pogradec, where you’ll find our stay for the night: Hotel Victoria.

Staying at Hotel Victoria

We picked Hotel Victoria because it’s right on the lakefront—and if you’re coming to Pogradec, the lake is the main event. We booked a lake-view room and my gosh, it delivered. The balcony was huge (seriously, we’ve seen smaller gardens), and while it could’ve done with a table and chairs, we didn’t even care. We just stood there soaking it all in—watching the sun melt into the lake, the colours shifting as the light faded, and that peaceful shimmer turning into moonlit calm. One of those moments that makes you pause and just go, “yep, this is the life.”

The hotel itself was a real surprise in the best way. It’s had a bit of a revamp recently and the rooms are fresh, modern and lovely—clean lines, comfy beds, and big windows that let in loads of light.

Breakfast and the Grounds

Breakfast was included, which is always a win, and it was just what we needed. A simple but filling spread of bread, fruit, eggs, cheese and good orange juice (and probably coffee too). Nothing over the top, but done really well.

The grounds were gorgeous too—big grassy spaces with sun loungers dotted around, perfect for summer when you can stretch out in the sun, take a dip in the crystal-clear lake, and watch the fishermen head out in their boats. You feel like you’ve stumbled across a slower, more peaceful way of life.

Would We Go Back?

Definitely. Hotel Victoria felt like a hidden gem—great location, lovely rooms, and views that make you want to stay for days. If you're road tripping through Albania and thinking of skipping Pogradec, don’t. It’s a special kind of quiet, and well worth the detour.
